As a simple example, in the month to date period (November 1-November 29) the S&P 500 has moved by greater than 1% (up or down) on 13 out of 20 trading days, while the Russell 2000 index has done the same on 12 out of 20 days. By comparison, in November 2006 the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 moved by greater than 1% on 2 and 6 days respectively (out of 21 days). So the average daily move in the S&P 500 in November 2007 has been more than 3x greater than in November 2006 (1.38% vs. 0.39%) and more than double in the Russell 2000 (1.57% vs. 0.72%).
