The story seems to suggest that the recession has nothing to do with sports, since a bunch of Raiders fans had enough money left over to buy a billboard in an effort to get Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis to give up the reins of his team and hire a General Manager. The Raiders are one of five NFL team's that do not employ a General Manager. Of those teams; the Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Washington Redskins, and of course the Raiders, only the Patriots have managed to be successful without a GM running the show.
The Cleveland Browns have placed Jamal Lewis on their injured reserve list, ending his 2009 season, and since he was set to retire at the end of the year anyway his career is now over. If his career is over Lewis will finish with 10,643 rushing yards leaving 21st on the all time list, just 36 yards short of 20th place Ricky Waters. Since he seemed content to move towards a life away from football, this injury isn't especially sad but Lewis was without a doubt one of those special players that come along once in a generation.
Jamal Lewis has probably plowed into the line for the last time. Cleveland's punishing running back, who announced last month that he planned to retire following this season, sustained an unspecified head injury in Sunday's loss to Cincinnati, raising the possibility that he has played his last down of an illustrious NFL career.
Browns starting safety Brodney Pool's season could be over and his career is in jeopardy after sustaining another concussion in Sunday's loss to Cincinnati.

What can you say about a team that wins 95 games, advances all the way to the National League Championship series, and really a team that should have a much rosier short term future? It seemsthat the Dodgers are in store for a huge collapse, the pending divorce proceedings between their owner and his wife, who had served as President of the team seems to be a harbinger of very bad things. On top of that their lack of a true Ace started was exposed during their post season run.
The Las Vegas Locos won the first ever UFL championship on the strength of a 4-2 regular season record, a great three point victory in the UFL championship game. It is kind of ironic that the Locos are owned by William Hambrecht, who happens to be the found of this upstart UFL league. For their wonderful inaugural season they were awarded the William Hambrecht trophy. Even though they won the first championship, they are as of right now the second best team in this league.
The Lions are continuing to blitz 40 to 50% of the time because they cannot get a steady pass rush with just their front four. While the blitz scheme is a well designed one, and Lions players are frequently getting into the opponents backfield free, they are not registering very many sacks.
Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan will miss his first NFL start this week against the Philadelphia Eagles. Ryan has been diagnosed with a turf toe injury and will sit for at least this week. Back up QB Chris Redman will get the start the game versus the Eagles, but the Falcons are facing a must win situation and are minus at least three starters on offense.
According to the Sporting News and New York's Daily News, Major League Baseball is in serious negotiations with a promoter in Puerto Rico about the possibility of playing some regular season games there as early as the 2010 season.
