+Problems, pitfalls and progress in reconstructing ancient climate data
Since a new 'reconstruction' of the last 2000 years from Craig Loehle is currently doing the rounds, we thought it might be timely to set out what the actual issues are in making such reconstructions (as opposed to the ones that are more often discussed), and how progress is being made despite the pitfalls.

+Genes in conflict - would an intelligent designer do this?
The weird part is, strictly speaking, the conflict is not between mother and fetus, but rather between genes within the same individual.

+Ancient Blood Found On Sculptures From Kingdom Of Mali
Scientists in France are reporting for the first time that sculptors from the fantastically wealthy ancient Empire of Mali -- once the source of almost half the world's gold -- used blood to form the beautiful patina, or coating, on their works of art.

+Beyond the Drake Equation - Calculating Life On Other Planets
In 1961, astronomer Frank Drake proposed a method of estimating the number of civilizations in our Galaxy that could be detectable from Earth.

+Flip-flopping gene expression can be advantageous
One gene for pea pod color generates green pods while a variant of that gene gives rise to the yellow-pod phenotype, a feature that helped Gregor Mendel, the 19th century Austrian priest and scientist, first describe genetic inheritance. However, many modern-day geneticists are focused on the strange ability of some genes to be expressed spontaneously in either of two possible ways.

+A Very Silent Night, for All But Dogs
Most people know that dogs can hear frequencies too high for humans to hear. But that doesn't mean something in those frequencies can't be music to their ears. The New Zealand SPCA has released a CDsingle called A Very Silent Night, recorded at frequencies dogs can hear, but not us. Not only that, they released a music video featuring NZ rapper Dei Hamo, as well.

+U.S.: 'We're not ready' to pledge emissions cuts
The United States will come up with its own plan to cut global-warming gases by mid-2008, and won't commit to mandatory caps at the U.N. climate conference, the chief U.S. negotiator said Saturday.

+Magnetic foam, a new shape changing material
A new material is full of voids (dark) between thin, curvy "struts." A magnetic field causes small single crystals along the struts to change length, which alters the macroscopic dimensions of the whole sample.

+Apple's publicity firm, also known as Ars Technica, gushes over a new Apple store opening
Apple has the amazing ability to turn the mundane--opening a new branch of a store in this case--into an event.

+Sex switch points way to smarter pest control
Turning off a sex "switch" triggered when female insects mate may be a smart and green way of controlling pests in future.
