+WOW: iPhone Reaches 100,000 Approved Apps
It’s not publicly announced by Apple, who likes pointing out milestones that make them look great, but if you look at the statsover at unofficial iPhone App directory App Shopper, there are currently 101,751 approved apps available for the iPhone. We knew that the App Store is getting there fast; in August, we reported there are 65,000 iPhone appsavailable. It took abour 2 and a half months for that number to reach 100,000 – truly a remarkable feat. Have in mind that this is the number of approved apps; the actual number of available applications is a bit lower; according to App Shopper, it’s currently at 93,035. As far as the competition goes, it’s hard not to rub it in. One needs only a quick look at (for example) Palm’s App Catalogor even the powerful Nokia’s Ovi Storeto see where they stand compared to Apple’s numbers. Windows Mobile has been around for over six years, and its Windows Marketplace for Mobileopened up a couple of weeks ago with 246 apps. Apple will probably officially announce the news soon. As far as what it all means in real, hard cash, just think about the August estimates that the iPhone app economy is worth 2.4 billion dollars.Tags: app store, apple, iphone

    +Tap Tap…Metallica!
Are you metal? Do you like Tap Tap Revenge, the popular iPhone game similar to Dance Dance Revolution, created by Tapulous? If you answered both these questions with a loud, thundering “yes”, we have a treat for you: Tap Tap Revenge: Metallica. It’s a variant of the popular game with songs only by the legendary band(once upon a time we’d crack jokes about their stances on piracy, but enough time has gone by to leave all that aside), aimed – says the developer – at hardcore Metallica fans. As for the band themselves, drummer Lars Ulrich claimsit’s not about the revenue, it’s about fun. “It’s one more thing that’ll keep me semi-cool in my kids’ eyes for another six months until the next thing comes out,” he said.Besides rocking out to Metallica tunes, users will also have access to a Metallica news feed with updates on the band, challenge updates and a public battle message board. As far as the included songs go, they represent a short, but pretty good overview of the band’s career: - Enter Sandman- Sad But True- King Nothing- All Nightmare Long- Some Kind of Monster- Master of Puppets- Seek & Destroy- Fuel- One- For Whom the Bell TollsThe app costs $4.99, but the folks at Tapulous, sly as they are, included a special enticement for fans: everyone who purchases the app will enter a contest to win two tickets to a December 5 concert in Las Vegas, plus transportation and the opportunity to meet the band. If you win, be sure to ask them how they feel about music piracy, we know they’ll appreciate it. Tags: metallica, tap tap revenge

+Now Use Google Voice With Your Existing Phone Number
One of the sticking points with the otherwise highly convenient Google Voice service has been that you had a choose a new number to use with the service. If you had an existing number that everyone already knew and wanted to switch over, you were pretty much out of luck.Luckily that changes today, with tonight’s Google announcementthat you can now use Google Voice with an existing phone number. Also notably, you can now add Google voicemail service to any of the mobile numbers linked to your account. Think of it a bit like Gmail for voicemail. Now when you first sign up for Google Voice you can choose between using your own number or choosing a new Google number. You still get many of Google Voice’s features when using your own number, including the Google voicemail feature you can now add to linked phones. Unfortunately it’s not a full number port, and you won’t get all of the Google Voice features when using your own number — at least not yet. But especially if you have an older phone that doesn’t already have a nice visual voicemail interface, the Google voicemail feature alone might be reason enough to switch. The company also says it plans to roll out a full service compatible with your existing number, including other great features of Voice like conference calling, call screening, and listening into calls before deciding to pick up.Check out the video about how Google voicemail works below. And if you’re still hunting for an invite to Google Voice, you can ask a friend for one.Do you use Google Voice? If not, will you consider using the service now that you can keep your existing number? Let us know in the comments.Reviews: Google, Google VoiceTags: Google, Google Voice, Mobile 2.0, voicemail

+OS Faceoff: Windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard
Last Thursday, Microsoft attempted to erase all of the bad memories left by Windows Vista wit the launch of perhaps the most anticipatedoperating system software yet: Windows 7. The new OS promises to be faster, sleeker, and more intuitive than its predecessor.Microsoft’s computing and OS rival didn’t take the Windows 7 hype sitting down, though. Apple launched a new wave of Get a Mac Adspainting Microsoft’s Windows flagship as an evolution of problems not worth enduring. Now with both sides at war once again, we thought it was appropriate to dedicate this week’s Web Faceoffto the long-standing Microsoft vs. Apple battle. This week’s competitors are none other than Microsoft Windows 7 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6. One is the newest edition of the PC OS, while the other is the standard bearer OS for all Apple computers. Which one emerges the victor…well, we’ll let you decide the outcome in the poll below.Remember: you have until 12:00 PM PT on Friday to cast your ballot. +Fashionistas: Be the Next Anna Wintour with Shmotter
This post is part of Mashable’s Spark of Genius series, which highlights a unique feature of startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. The series is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark.Name: Shmotter.comQuick Pitch: Shmotter.com allows users to create, browse, rate and purchase outfits using clothing and accessories from a wide selection of retailers.Genius Idea: Men, you might not be able to identify with this, but we women need to visualize our online clothing and accessory purchases as part of a whole look. In fact, one of our biggest fears is buying something too trendy that we never wear because it doesn’t work with our wardrobe. We also dream of being the next editor of Vogue, pulling together looks that make women crave clothes. That’s why we have a sneaking suspicion that fashion-conscious women will lose themselves in hours of wardrobe pairings on Shmotter.Shmotter pulls together the latest clothes, accessories, and shoes from popular brands and retailers and gives women a place to build their own looks or peruse and vote on the outfits that other wanna-be fashionistas have concocted.Of course, the most appealing part is actually creating a new look, as Shmotter allows you to select from all different categories of clothing and accessories — think tops, sweaters, jeans, dresses, scarves, shorts, rings, jackets, bags, and the list goes on — and drag and drop items on to the outfit palette, resize them as needed, and just as easily remove them. It’s fashion meets function with a little community voting thrown into mix. Add in the fact that it feels like you’re a nouveau fashion editor creating your own spread for an online audience, and you have an experience that will suck in women the world round. The site also includes typical community features like the ability to save items as favorites, as well as the ability to buy individual items online, vote on the looks of your peers, and use the Tweetmeme buttons to tweet your favorites. While we definitely see the potential in Shmotter, we’d love the site to add a few additional female-friendly features, such as the ability to view item prices before you save the finalized look, the option to save outfits as drafts, and ways to filter items by color or style. All in all though, Shmotter weaves together a comfortable and eye-catching online experience perfect for taking your fashion-forward vision from concept to reality.Sponsored by Microsoft BizSparkBizSpark is a startup program that gives you three-year access to the latest Microsoft development tools, as well as connecting you to a nationwide network of investors and incubators. +Microsoft: Windows 7 + Family Guy = Whoops
Remember Microsoft’s plan to band together with Family Guyfor a Windows 7 promotion? Well, apparently 7 greasy slabs of Whopperand totally awkward launch partiesare a go, but Family Guy’s extra special sense of humor ultimately proved too much for Microsoft. According to Variety, they’ve pulled their sponsorship from the Fox show after executives watched the taping of it on October 16th. The episode was apparently the typical Family Guy fare, but Microsoft felt that the “riffs on deaf people, the Holocasut, feminine hygiene and incest” were “not a fit with the Windows brand.”Alright, fair enough — and better to have realized it before the episode actually aired, of course. But on the other hand, had anyone bothered to watch the show before inking the ad deal?Apparently Fox still plans to air the episode with another to-be-named sponsor. We’ll be very curious to see who that mysterious sponsor is, and how much Windows 7-related content will remain in the episode regardless. Who do you think should leap in and capitalize on the easy PR boost?Tags: family guy, MARKETING, microsoft, tv, Windows 7

+Get Your Files Out of Google Docs With New Export Options
Google Docs has become a viable tool for web workers and businesses looking to create, manage, and share their word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet files in the cloud. To-date, however, if you’ve wanted to take your data out of the cloud and download it to your desktop, you would have to do so one document at a time. But today, Google announcedthe “Convert, Zip and Download” feature in Google Docs to tackle this challenge. The new features make it a simple two step process to pull down any and all the Google documents of your choosing (up to 500 MB), convert them to your preferred file types, and zip them up in a concrete package you can download and save to your desktop. The new feature is accessible from the Google Docs home page, and all that is required is that you select the files you wish to download, click the “More actions” tab, and select “Export.” You’ll then be guided through the straightforward process, which will let you convert your files to a number of different formats, including PDF, .xls, and .doc. Once you hit continue, the file zipping process automatically begins.Though Convert, Zip and Download is a rather unsexy update to Google Docs, it should prove to be an incredibly handy utility and time saver should the need arise to ever export all your data out of Google. We can thank the Google Data Liberation Frontfor today’s important update, and we can expect even more liberation features in Google products in the future.Image from mistercamon FlickrReviews: Flickr, Google, Google DocsTags: Google, google docs, zip

+Sign-In to MySpace With … Facebook?
It could be the ultimate admission of defeat, or, a pretty smart move given its current strategy. According to The Telgraph, MySpace is currently discussing a partnership with Facebook where music and video content published to MySpace could easily be shared on Facebook via Facebook Connect. How far that Connect implementation might goisn’t clear, but Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg tells The Telegraph, “MySpace could become a Facebook Connect partner – which would allow people to share content they liked from MySpace with their Facebook network.” MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta, who used to work at Facebook, confirms the talks with the paper. Why This Would Be SmartMySpace has one of the best catalogs of music and videos on the Web. Allowing users to share them on Facebook – far and away the most popular social network – would increase distribution for this content, and potentially get Facebook users to re-consider MySpace as a content portal and not a dying social network. Why It’s RiskyAlthough MySpace may envision itself as an entertainment portal, its bread and butter is still its social network – diminished as it may be. Encouraging members to use Facebookfor sharing content could hasten its demise in social networking at a rate far exceeding its growth in music and entertainment. The result of that would be even more domination by Facebook, which, it should be noted, is already starting to move into digital musicon its own (and already serves as a major distribution point for YouTube content as well). A Bold Move Is NeededIf MySpacewants to remain relevant it has to be bold, and partnering with the site that toppled it as world’s biggest social network would certainly be that. Given its current goals, and the benefits we already know that Facebook Connect can provide to content sites, don’t be surprised if this deal comes to fruition in short order. We’ll keep you posted. +Larry Johnson’s Twitter Tirade Targets Coach and Heckling Fan
Anyone can find themselves in a world of troubleif they tweet something their employer or followers deem inappropriate. But when you throw in the high visibility of professional sports leagues like the NFL, Twitter becomes a platform for media fires that are sparked by words tweeted in the heat of a moment.Larry Johnson [@Toonicon] of the Kansas City Chiefs is the lastest victim of his own Twitter doing. After a loss to the San Diego Chargers, the running back turned to Twitter to insult the team’s head coach, Todd Haley. The comments sparked an exchange between Johnson and Twitter user @jaredlaunius, with the latter bringing up a nightclub incident that Johnson plead guilty to, and Johnson, in turn, responding with a very clear homophobic slur. Why Johnson felt compelled to use Twitter to unleash his frustration after the loss is anyone’s guess, but despite the Twitter account being made private, and the offending tweets deleted, we do know what was tweeted. Here are the first few tweets from Johnson that started the heated exchange (as reported by Yahoo! Sports):“my father got more creditentials than most of these pro coaches. … google my father!!!!!!!My father played for the coach from “rememeber the titans”. Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn”Then Twitter user @jaredlaunius chimed in (his tweets are still are public) with the following:“Interesting comments by Larry Johnson ( @toonlcon ) about “coaches.” Hey LJ, is it Haley’s fault you fall when D-Linemen blow on you?Apologies. His Twitter alias is @toonicon whatever the hell that means. Probably something about spitting in women’s faces.”This is where things started to get a little carried away, with Johnson’s responses escalating to the point of calling Launius a “Christopher street boy,” and his Twitter avatar a “fag pic,” as evidenced in the screenshot above from the Kansas City News Blog.Clearly both parties were out of line, but given that Johnson has his team and the NFL to answer to, we’re pretty sure that there will be repercussions for his Twitter behavior. In fact, we think, despite his own words, that he probably will regret his tweets once he’s slapped with a fine or encouraged to issue an apology. We’ll update this post when we know more.Image courtesy of iStockphoto, space-heater.Reviews: Twitter, iStockphotoTags: larry johnson, twitter

+What’s Your Favorite Mobile App of 2009? #openwebawards
The mobile space has blown up exponentially in the past year. The CTIA semi-annual wireless industry surveywas released a few weeks ago and it included some mind-blowing numbers. 4.1 billion SMS messages are being sent daily, and there are now over 276 million wireless users in the US. And Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker gave a recent presentation at the Web 2.0 Summit showing that the mobile web is taking over the world.Whatever your feelings about the iPhone, it’s almost impossible to dismiss the notion that Apple introduced the idea of smartphones and always-on mobile connectivity to the masses. And while not the first makers of a mobile marketplace, they were the first to capitalize on creating a developer ecosystem to bring thousands of applications to iPhone owners. Apple’s iPhone also contributed to the astronomical rise in AT&T’s mobile data traffic, which is up 4,932% from three years ago.Now we live in a world where there are countless mobile applications and markets which include the Ovi storeand the Android Marketplace, the latter of which will become even more important as more and more carriers release phones running the Android operating system. By Reuters account, Google Android is forecastedto take over the number two spot in the smartphone market by 2012.Regardless of your carrier or mobile device, you’re clearly turning to the mobile web and using mobile applications more than ever before. +Max Levchin: Slide’s Revenue Has Tripled This Year [Video]
Slide, who makes some of the most popular applications across Facebook, MySpace, and other social networks, is a fairly good barometer for how the overall space might be doing. And in an interview with CNBC today, Slide’s founder and CEO Max Levchin (also a co-founder at PayPal) disclosed that his company’s revenue has tripled since last year — good news then, perhaps, for the hundreds of other companies attempting to monetize the world of social media.Although he wouldn’t disclose what the numbers are (and CNBC’s commentator jokes it’s from $10 to $30), Levchin does say that Slide is nearing profitability. Back in early 2008, the company was valued at $500 millionafter raising $50 million in venture capital funding.Check out the video – which is largely about the virtual goods business – below:Tags: max levchin, slide, social networking
