Today, AOLcomes back on the NYSE following its spinoff from Time Warner (TMX) – and the one-time web titan is marking the transition with a rebrand. Gone is the blue AOL of old, replaced with goldfish, monsters, butterflies and the partially lower case “Aol” branding we previewed previously. These symbols represent themes on the site: pick one to change the color scheme and background. At the core of this new independent strategy: content, content, content. Not only is the homepage customizable to the content you want, but a “News Feeds” tab provides an RSS reader one click away from the homepage. What do you think? Is the new AOL a step in the right direction, or the wrong one? And how will AOL perform on its own?Tags: aol, nyse, tmx
The convergence of social media and gaming is becoming harder to deny. The domination of the FarmVille Facebook game, the blockbuster acquisition of Playfish by EA, and the rise of the iPhone as a gaming platformimmediately come to mind as examples of social media’s impact on the game industry. The latter especially interests us. In September, Apple SVP Phil Schiller shared some interesting statson the iPhone and iPod Touch as gaming platforms. While the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP had 3,680 and 607 games respectively, the iPhone app store had over 21,000 different games. You may not think it, but the iPhone and iPod Touch are gaming forces to be reckoned with. That’s why gaming is the subject of this week’s Web Faceoff, where we take key tech, web, and social media tools and pit them against one another for your vote. Not only do we like to find out whether you prefer Windows 7 or Snow Leopard, but it’s also our opportunity to gauge the pulse of the social media universe. For portable gaming, do you prefer the dual screens of the Nintendo DS, the raw power of the Sony PSP, or the versatility and touchscreen of the iPhone and iPod Touch? We want your vote (and your comments) on the matter. The polls are open until Sunday, December 13th at 12:00 PM. Get to it!Who would win in a fight: Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, or the iPhone/iPod Touch?(online surveys)`Tags: apple, gaming, ipod, iPod Touch, Nintendo, nintendo ds, sony, Sony PSP, web faceoff
Brick and mortar book retailer Barnes & Noble pushed hard to make a splashy entry into the digital book reading space this holiday season with the Nook— perhaps too hard, according to the spate of reviews now coming in. From the sound of things, many of the differentiating features unfortunately arrive with significant caveats.Still, the battle this round may go to Amazon’s still industry-leading Kindle, but the war may not yet be over: representatives for the Nook say a host of updates and fixes will be on the way in the new year. It might be too little, too late to salvage this holiday season for the Nook — but then again, it’s a rather moot point considering the device is sold out until 2010regardless.We’ve rounded up a number of Nook reviews from trusted sources below for those of you who want to check out various hands-on perspectives and opinions on Barnes and Noble’s entry into the eReader space. Do you plan to pick up the Nook? Let us know in the comments. Engadget: “In the end, the Nook is an intriguing product launched by a powerful force in the world of booksellers, but the initial offering feels long on promises and short on delivery. With the right software revisions, the Nook could be a tsunami, but as it stands right now, it’s only a mild swell.”David Pogue (The New York Times): “Missing features are symptoms of B&N’s bad case of Ship-at-All-Costs-itis. But the biggest one of all is the Nook’s half-baked software. To use the technical term, it’s slower than an anesthetized slug in winter.”Gizmodo: “If you have to pick one right now, stick with the Kindle. It’s a tough call, because I see a lot of potential in Nook that might not be in Kindle, but damn if the Kindle hasn’t grown tocomfortably inhabit its e-ink skin. As long as you don’t expect apps and extras on a Kindle, it delivers the best ebook experience there is at this moment. And it just went international. But while the limitations of a Kindle are clear, the limitations of the Nook are hazier, presumably further out.”Walt Mossberg (The Wall Street Journal): “My recommendation on the Nook is to wait, even if you prefer its features to the Kindle’s. It’s not fully baked yet.”CNet: “While it has a few kinks, the Nook’s extra features make it a worthy and enticing alternative to the Kindle.”Technologizer (Harry McCracken): “A mostly appealing collection of features add up to the Kindle’s most formidable rival. It’s definitely a 1.0 product, though, with a slow, sometimes clunky interface.”Slashgear: “For first-time ebook buyers, then, we reckon it’s pretty much a no-brainer: unless they travel significantly and want to buy new content while they’re away, or they have a particular need for DOC or HTML compatibility, the nook’s user-experience bests that of the Kindle. After all, by the time the nook is generally available, we’ll hopefully have seen the impact of the upcoming software update, which should slim down reformating delays.”Huffington Post: “I’ve been trying Barnes & Noble Inc.’s $259 Nook for a few days, and I’m not eager to prolong the acquaintance. Some of its problems are specific to the Nook, but most of them have to do with the screen technology the industry has settled on.”Tags: barnes and noble, ereaders, Kindle, meta-review, nook, reviews
Just a few days ago we heard rumours about the imminent sale of Friendster, one of the first-generation social networks that originally kicked off the craze. Through self-reinvention the site has managed to stay relevant to a large audience in Asia, though its influence is notably diminished in the West over the years since its founding in 2002 and heydey in 2003-4.There aren’t too many details emerging yet, but Business Times is reportingthat the deal is finalized with a sale to MOL Global, a Malaysian e-commerce company that Friendster has been working with since Octoberto power its payments platform. MOL Global CEO Ganesh Kumar Bangah took the stage at a signing ceremony today in Kuala Lumpur to announce an expected influx of $110 million yearly revenue from the acquisition. This deal makes sense given Friendster’s audience and the current playing field for social networking in Asia, where Friendster has more monthly uniques than any other network. We expect this combination of assets to lead Friendster deeper into a microtransaction-type revenue strategy, perhaps involving a greater focus on social gaming moving forward. Social gaming is becoming a significant revenue play for social networks worldwide, in the U.S. with companies like Zynga, EA’s Playfishand Playdompulling down multi-millions in annual revenues from games on Facebook and MySpace, and in Latin America where hi5 is aggressively pursuing its successful social gaming strategyas well. It’s difficult to judge just how much the deal makes sense until we see the actual financial numbers, but it could be a decent exit for Friendster after a long and challenging road.Did you use Friendster back in the day? This post is part of Mashable’s Spark of Genius series, which highlights a unique feature of startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. The series is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark.Name: SnapHavenQuick Pitch: SnapHaven is an online photo storage site that guarantees the safety and security of members’ precious memories.Genius Idea: Although digital cameras have made taking and sharing photographs faster and easier than ever, the nature of these photos means that they are susceptible to data corruption, accidental deletion or even worse, the closing of a storage service. SnapHaven is designed to be a place where photographers or photo lovers can safely and permanently back up their memories. What makes SnapHaven different than other sites? The company stores your images in four different data centers — including a military nuclear-proof bunker — and does frequent file integrity checks and backups. They’ve also partnered with non-profit group the Foundation of Data Performance to ensure that the data and photos remain saved, even if SnapHaven goes out of business. You can sign up for a free SnapHaven account and upload 100 photos off the bat. You then have the opportunity to use their 10-day Jump Start package. It’s $24.99, and will let you upload up to 10,000 photos. The only catch is you have to do that in 10 days. Additional photographs can be backed up in increments of 300 for $8.99. That ends up being about 3 cents a photo. Once you’ve uploaded your photo, SnapHaven says it’s there for life.Although you can also share and order prints of your photographs from SnapHaven, we don’t really see this as a traditional photo-sharing service. Instead, this is your photo backup solution. Spark of Genius Series Sponsored by Microsoft BizSparkBizSpark is a startup program that gives you three-year access to the latest Microsoft development tools, as well as connecting you to a nationwide network of investors and incubators. There are no upfront costs, so if your business is privately owned, less than three years old, and generates less than U.S.$1 million in annual revenue, you can sign up today.Entrepreneurs can take advantage of the Azure Services platformfor their website hosting and storage needs. Microsoft recently announced the “new CloudApp()” contest– use the Azure Services Platform for hosting your .NET or PHP app, and you could be the lucky winner of a USD 5000* (please see website for official rules and guidelines).”Reviews: PHPTags: backup, photo storage, Photos, snaphaven
On December 4, 2008, Facebook Connect opened for business. It was the first major extension of the Facebookplatform, allowing users to log into their favorite Web sites with their Facebook credentials and move their social graph anywhere on the Web.Now a year and five days later, Facebook is (belatedly) celebrating the birth of one of its most successful products. Sixty million userssuccessful, in fact. The company revealed that, since December of 2008, Facebook has become integrated on more than 80,000 Web sites (probably not including the countless ones using apps like Disqus) and is in use by more than 60 million Facebook users. That amounts to 160,000 new Connect users every single day. While those numbers are indeed impressive, they still only represent 17 percent of Facebook’s 350 million total users. Still, that gives Facebook Connect more users than both Twitterand LinkedIn.Connect has been an incredible platform and a major driver for Facebook’s increasing growth and influence around the Web. It originally began as a counter to MySpace’s data availability initiativeand was in fact integrated with key partners all the way back in July 2008, which I kind of consider Connect’s real birthday.Regardless, the platform keeps growing and has avoided the pitfalls that have taken down other Facebook products, most notably Beacon. Happy belated birthday, Facebook Connect.Reviews: Disqus, Facebook, TwitterTags: facebook, facebook connect
Avatar isn’t the only media property to spawn an awesome mashup— the classic Christmas TV special Frosty the Snowman also got the remix treatment.CBS took some snippets from the 1969 animated special and combined it with audio clips from the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. The gag is that Frosty is now voiced by Neil Patrick Harris’s womanizing character, Barney Stinson. The result is called Frosty the Inappropriate Snowman. As funny as the juxtaposition between the children’s classic and Stinson’s sexually charged (and often hilarious) barbs is, not everyone is happy with the results.Plenty of comments on the clip’s YouTube pageinsult the concept, CBS and even fans of the show or video. There’s lots of hand-wringing about defacing a classic, and more than a few obscenities. Here’s the video:We think both the clip and the expressed outrage are pretty hilarious. This was clearly something designed for fans of the show who enjoy remixes and mashups — people who can find humor in stories that existed decades before they were actually born. We count ourselves in this group. We do have to knock some style points off this mashup in one regard: It’s hardly original. In 2006, an editor from the TV show Scrubs (which then aired on NBC, but now airs on ABC) got actors from the show to provide voicework for A Charlie Brown Christmas. The result is both sweet AND awesome. What do you think of the controversy? Much ado about nothing or has poor Frosty’s reputation been forever tarnished? They say the soul weighs 21 grams, and now we have a measurement of the American mind on any given day: 34 gigabytes. According to a University of California, San Diego, studyhighlighted by The New York Times, the average American consumes 34 GB worth of content a day, including a whopping 100,000 words of information. The report clarifies that we don’t necessarily parse a full 100,000 words per day, but that that rather astounding figure does cross our eyes and ears each 24-hour interval via multiple channels: the Web, TV, text messaging, radio, video games and more. The study goes on to break down which of those media tend to occupy most of our time. The big winner is still television at almost 45 percent of our daily allowance, but the computer is a not-too-distant second at about 27 percent. In all, we spend about 11.8 hours per day absorbing mass quantities of information, sometimes multitasking in front of multiple screens simultaneously.Video games saw the biggest leap in recent years; we now spend 2.5 percent of the day on computers, consoles, and on an increasingly popular selection of social networking games like FarmVilleand Pet Society. And although pundits and sociologists have been quick to decry the decline of print as a corresponding decline in literacy, the increase in time spent on the Web actually means people are “reading more than ever,” according to co-author of the study Roger Bohn.Do the results of the study seem realistic to you? Would you classify yourself as above or below the American average in your data consumption diet? Earlier this morning, iPhone owners woke to a wonderful surprise: live video streaming courtesy of Ustream’s Live Broadcaster app. Now we’re learning that Qik, the live-streaming service for mobile devices, has submitted their iPhone version of the application to Apple as well.In a blog postfrom earlier today, Qik says, “We have now taken the next step and submitted the Qik application that enables you to share your experience live from your iPhone for approval to App Store.”As you may know, iPhone users not afraid of jailbreaking their devices have been able to stream live video from their phones for more than a year now. In fact, I’ve been a fan of the company and the service since they released their unapproved version of the application.Should the new app marry the functionality of the original, Qik iPhone users will be able to broadcast video live from their phones, tap to quickly tweet or post to Facebook, add titles and tags and view comments as they’re created. If Apple approves Qik’s application — and there’s no obvious reason why it should not — it would suggest that the flood gates to live broadcasting have been opened. These new live-streaming apps are most certainly an interesting development, especially since they come at a time when Apple is helping AT&T take down Verizon in an advertising war, and AT&T is openly urging iPhone usersto cut back on their mobile consumption.Reviews: App Store, FacebookTags: broadcast, iphone application, livestream, qik
Patrick Moran is chief strategy officer at Fuze Box, the company behind Fuze Meeting. He was also chief marketing officer at Mzinga, a leading social media and white label community provider, and led online marketing at Cisco WebEx. Fuze Box is one of the leading providers of real-time video collaboration tools today. It’s no secret that online video is hot. A recent study by comScorerevealed that in October 2009, more than 167 million viewers in the U.S. watched an average of 167 videos each, while YouTube reached 1 billion views per day – or 41 million views per hour – in the same month. At my company, we’ve seen our own surge in video viewing. Video now accounts for the largest number of files uploaded into online meetings on our platform.Given that many of our customers work in sales and marketing, what I infer from these numbers is that video marketing is poised for a huge year in 2010. The reason is clear: video simply engages people in a way that static text and images cannot. There are dozens of studies that show the power of video to boost customer interaction, drive sales, encourage viral sharing, and build brand awareness. And according to MarketingSherpa, 95 percent of the companies that have used online video marketing are happy with the resultsand expect to use it again in the future.Luckily, it’s never been easier to create marketing videos. You can create videos for free using stock images and still photos on services like Jivox, or even transfer existing TV spots to the Web. You can also create screencasts on sites like Screenrin under an hour by recording voice over still images, screenshots, and slides. If you want to shoot your own video, you can edit the footage using sites like Pixorialor Jaycut. Of course, you can also hire a video production agency to create the videos for you.Whatever type of video you create, make sure it’s short – under two minutes is usually best, but 30 seconds is even better. Simplicity is also key. Keep voiceovers straightforward and music at a minimum. If you want an example of the power of utter simplicity, check out the unique videos that explain hundreds of complex subjects produced by Common Craft. Here are some great ways to use video to boost your business next year:1. Punch Up Your Web SiteThe easiest way get started is simply to embed your videos on your Web site. You can use YouTube to do this, or alternatives like Vimeoor Sorenson Media. Once you’ve got the videos playing on your site, make sure they are easy to share by adding a “share this” button on each video so that viewers can pass them along via Twitter, Facebook, and other viral channels. Already on Twitter, 8 percent of all shared URLs are links to videoson YouTube.2. Use Video to SellWe’ve found that our sales reps see 20 percent higher close rates when they play a video at the beginning of their virtual sales demo. Other online services report similar results: Jivox, an online video ad platform, used this video demoon their web site to increase registrations by 25 percent – they even embedded a signup form right on the demo page to collect registrations. You can also use services like Wistiato share a video with prospects and track how they interact with the video.3. Use Video in Your Online AdsOnline video ads are growing in popularity because they are effective in driving sales. According to a study by the Online Publishers Association, 52 percent of people who watched an online video ad took action after viewing the ad, such as visiting the advertiser’s website (31 percent) or searching online for more information on the product (22 percent). A full 12 percent went on to make a purchase – giving video ads one of the highest conversion rates in the industry.4. Help Customers Get More Value Out of Your ProductThe power of video is that you can show prospective and existing customers your product instead of just telling them about it. At our company, we developed a short video that explains how to use our product. This has dramatically increased product usage for both online and mobile customers. Another great example is Jigsaw: they use crowdsourcing to gather and vet business contact information, a new approach that relies on customer participation. They’ve created a whole set of slick video tutorialson their site to make it easy for people to fully utilize the service.5. Go MobileMake sure your videos can be viewed on many different devices. A good rule of thumb for whether you should modify your videos to work on mobile devices is: “If a video is worth sharing on Twitter, it’s worth making it mobile-phone-friendly,” since 40 percent of Twitter users access the service via mobile devices, according to an October 2009study by Crowd Science. Already, there are more than 4.1 billionmobile phone users worldwide – at least 10 percent of which are video-enabled smartphones. Make sure these mobile warriors can view your videos. The Bottom LineOnline video is a powerful tool in today’s marketing arsenal. With 2010 fast approaching, make sure your company has a clear video strategy in place that works alongside your online, social, paid media, PR, and other marketing strategies. Your customers want video, so give it to them!More business resources from Mashable:- 5 Important Web Video Lessons for Small Business Owners- Mashable’s Social Media Guide for Small Businesses- 4 Ways Social Media is Changing Business- 5 Advanced Social Media Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses- 6 Must-Follow Steps for Selling in Any Economy- 5 Easy Social Media Wins for Your Small BusinessImage courtesy of iStockphoto, fotoIEReviews: Facebook, JayCut, Twitter, Vimeo, YouTube, iStockphoto, videoTags: business, List, Lists, MARKETING, small business, video
As the blogosphere waits with baited breath to get their hands on the physical hardware wonder that is Boxee Box, the company is using their blog to let more information trickle out about the Internet geek’s dream machine. You may recall that the Boxee Box, made by D-link, is a Wi-Fi-enabled hardware device that will include HDMI, SPDIF and RCA Audio connections to run Boxee Beta on your TVset for under $200.Now we’re also learningthat it will play almost anything, including non-DRM media. The RF remote makes it possible to control the device even when it’s out of sight, and it’s much smaller than originally portrayed. In fact, it looks to be no taller than a can of Coke.So those of you who are scared of purchasing yet another large device that will take over your entire media center: Fear not. According to Boxee’s blog:“Rest assured the Boxee Box will fit into your entertainment center. If the look doesn’t quite fit with your decor, not to worry. The RF remote means you can place the box out of sight and still control it. Of course, the Boxee Box prefers being on top.”While we wait for its official January debut at CES and the much anticipated 2010 Q2 launch, check out my interview with Boxee CEO Avner Ronen for NBC San Diego below. We’ve also included a few additional images to further pique your curiosity.Boxee Box: The InterviewBoxee Box: The PhotosReviews: BoxeeTags: avner ronen, boxee, boxee beta, boxee box
Here at Mashable, there’s little we love more than a good mashup. And when that mashup involves one of the most heavily anticipated films of the year as well as puppets, we get even more excited. You hear that right. Puppets.Avatar hits theaters worldwide in a little more than a week, but the trailer parodies have already arrived — including mashups, which take the audio from one trailer and combine it with clips from a completely different film (usually an animated film for better lip-matching). And of all the creations out there, this mashup of the trailer for Avatarand the 2004 film Team America: World Police is one of the best.Check out Matt Shapiro’s fine work:You know, I kind of like this version better. Brandon Mendelson is the co-author of Dracula And Kittens, a book that has little to do with networking and everything to do with the corporate food chain. For updates, you can follow Brandon on Twitter. Most columns on networking are from a business perspective. These authors want you to collect cards and make as many “connections” as possible. But what are you really connecting to? A “connection” is a poor way to refer to someone you plan to associate with for a long time. A friend is what you should be going for. Friends will help you without hesitation or compensation. A connection might help you, but may also expect something in return. It’s hard to build a fruitful relationship with that.Without friends, your network is useless. And if you’re paying close attention to who succeeds in social media, it’s always the person with the strongest network. Thanks to a few years as a Resident Assistant at SUNY Potsdam, I think I might be able to steer you in the right direction. RAs are trained to take a group of strangers and get them to network. If you’re successful, you have what’s called a “good floor.” These networks of friends almost always grow strong, even years after graduation. So how can we apply the “good floor” model to online social networks? Here are some tips.1. Avoid the Cattle CallsFloor meetings are useless for RAs. They’re mostly a dog and pony show with little substance. Online (and offline) networking opportunities are usually the same — not all of them, mind you, but many. You’ll want to be highly specific about who you’re connecting with, so grabbing as many screen names (or business cards) won’t do you much good. Instead, follow the conversations andjump in with those discussing what you’re interested in. This is the best way to start a meaningful interaction.2. Quality Over QuantityIt’s a cliche, and we all hate them, but this one is true. Five people who care about you and what you’re doing is far more valuable than 1,000 people who aren’t paying attention. So once you’re listening, hone in on five (and no more) people you would like to get to know. 3. Avoid the Shallow EndA relationship built entirely on resharing someone else’s content may be useful in the beginning, but then what? You don’t want to get into the auto-pilot mode of “I’ll share your stuff if you share mine.”Instead, chat with the person about which content is best suited for each to share. It’s the best way for social media friends (and roommates) to get the most out of the relationship.4. Find Common BondsDo you know how RAs diffuse tense situations? It usually has nothing to do with enforcing rules. Most of the time, it’s finding a common bond between two opposing residents. The same is true for online friendships. Sure, you both love Twitter, that’s nothing special. But if you share a passion for the same sports team, or both love New Orleans’ “Krewe of the Rolling Elvi,” that’s even better. If you find that bond and stick with it, over time the discussion will lead to other things.5. Meet Them OfflineBack in September I met @HardlyNormalin Times Square. Until that time, I had only talked with him through Twitter, but Mark is a guy I wanted to work with, and whose cause I think everyone should support. He was planning to be in New York at the same time I was, and we met up.Meeting an online friend has many advantages. These days, people are finding their future college roommates through Facebook and meeting up with them before school. Although meeting an online friend is not always feasible, if the opportunity comes up, go for it. I know some people may find meeting strangers online creepy, but it’s an important step, and one that makes the difference between a superficial connection and a real one. Just be careful, and always do your due diligence before an in-person meet-up.What are your steps for making lasting friendships online?
